Hernán Ordoñez

Hernán Ordoñez was treasurer of the executive board of the prison workers’ union, Valley Section of the Association of Employees of Inpec – ASEINPEC.

Hernán was killed on Saturday, June 5, 2010 while in the presence of his mother. Two men fired shots at Hernan from the back of a motorcycle in Cali, Valle de Cauca, Colombia.  The previous week, a shareholder of Medoro Resources referred to the union as a “small group conformed to the guerillas and paramilitary that are against the exploitation of mining."

In response to Hernán’s assassination, the CUT not only rejects the vile murder but also demands that the National Government provide security to the members of SINTRAMIENENERGETICA Segovia and that there is a stop to the negotiations by means of the Superintendent of Societies and the Uribe supporters.

On the same day that Hernán was murdered, there was a failed assassination attempt on Jhon Jairo Zapata Marulanda, Secretary of Health of the Board of Directors of SINTRAMIENENERGETICA.  Zapata Marulanda was severely wounded around 12:30 in the afternoon on Saturday, June 5, 2010.  He was hit by three bullets fired by men riding a motorcycle.

Both men were involved in a labor conflict in which the workers and pensioners of the gold mine rejected the offer of the Supervision of Societies, the Ministry of Mines, and the Government.  The offer entailed selling the assets of the extinct Frontina Gold Mines to the Canadian multinational, Medora Resources while actively saying they were yielding to the workers and pensioners in accordance with Colombian laws.
