Impunity is near-total in Colombia for those who murder trade unionists. Less than 2% cases have been successfully prosecuted, leaving an impunity rate of over 98%.

According to a March 2008 Colombian government report, there have been only 22 convictions for the over 400 murders that have taken place since August 2002, when President Alvaro Uribe took office.
