New Report Shows Violence at Factory in Mexico

The Worker Rights Consortium released a new report in early July, showing that a PRI-affiliated organization, Anotorcha Campesina, carried out violence against the local union at the Mexmode factory in Puebla, Mexico.

According to the report, "The WRC’s inquiry found that serious labor rights violations have occurred at the facility, including violence and threats of violence against workers involved in trade union activities and the unlawful intervention of government authorities in an internal union dispute. These violations arose from legitimate grievances on the part of workers regarding the elected leadership of the union. However, what began as a peaceful effort by union members to raise concerns about their leadership was effectively hijacked by outside political actors – namely Peasants’ Torch and its allies in the government. Workers recruited by Peasants’ Torch committed a series of physical assaults of elected union representatives, all of which took place inside the factory. Most of the assaults were carried out by male workers against female workers."
